As the Sun peaks over the horizon, painting the eastern sky with its promise of new beginnings, you yawn and stretch, ready for the day to begin. You feel the gentle spring breeze through the open window, the curtains fluttering gently in its wake and upon the wind, you hear a song. It’s the happy tune of the songbirds in a nearby tree. Feeling called to hear more, you make your way to the window, peering out into the morning light to find several bluebirds singing the day to life. One takes notice of you and flies to the windowsill. He has a message for you so listen closely.

Because of their place within the sky and upon the winds, birds in general are known messengers of Spirit and deities, each one specializing in their own brand of magick and message type along with their unique symbology. Bluebirds, across many cultures, are a symbol of happiness, joy, hope, and love. Call upon our little winged companion if you need assistance finding these things in your life.

Bluebirds also have the added uniqueness of their coloring to symbolize individuality and living authentically. The color blue in nature is rare. Approximately 1 in 10 plants have blue flowers and even fewer animals have blue coloring. This is because there isn’t a true blue color to be found in nature and actually occurs through light manipulation as opposed to real pigmentation. Those plants and animals that appear to be a vivid blue, achieve their color with microscopic structuring to create a pattern that will provide enough light manipulation to gain the blue shades that we see. So, if you are having trouble with your identity or living your authentic life, seek the advice of bluebird and let him show you what it means to fly your true path. They also remind us not to confuse light with righteousness. Society tells us that we need to "live in the light" but bluebird sings that this could be a "trick" that keeps us from looking into the shadows.

Blue is associated with open spaces such as the sky, freedom, intuition, imagination,

inspiration and sensitivity. It’s also considered to be a color of stability and reliability. It evokes feelings of calm, security, and order. According to Native American mythology, seeing a bluebird means that you can look forward to a coming of peace and harmony, within and without. Because our feathered friend flies unabashedly on his blue wings, he too carries these qualities and will assist you in achieving them if you call upon him.

Our fifth chakra, the throat chakra aligns with the color blue. The throat chakra is linked to our

communication, our ability to speak our truth, and ensuring that our voice is heard.  Because of bluebird’s coloring, as well as his aptitude as a songbird, he can help you to release any blockages or slow movement you might have in your fifth chakra. He will show you how to raise your voice and sing. You can use the following invocation to assist with this:

      “Bluebird sings

  Raise your voice

  Clear what’s blocked

   I ask you please

  Throat chakra energy

   Now it swirls easily.”

You can repeat this three times a day until you feel like the throat chakra block has been cleared. Bluebird may also be able to assist if you have a teenager going through puberty with embarrassing voice changing/ cracking, or with bouts of laryngitis, those suffering from thyroid problems, throat cancers, or other throat related issues.  *Remember that animal medicine does not replace traditional medical therapies but it can help to enhance it.

Bluebirds, with their lovely and unique coloring remind us of the beauty to be found in nature. With their symbolism of optimism and happiness, they reflect our inner child to us and the importance of embracing them as well as our soul’s need to live authentically. If bluebird’s song has made its way into your life, take a moment to listen and hear their message. Whether they’re telling you of the peace and harmony that’s on its way or they are here to help your voice to be heard, they have shown up for a reason.

Bluebird reminds us not to deny our inner child.
